Manage health information sharing options

Learn how Grow Therapy participates in a health information exchange and how to set your data-sharing preferences.

Grow Therapy is joining Carequality, a Health Information Exchange (HIE) network that enables providers to securely access your Grow Therapy records for care coordination, and enables Grow Therapy providers to do the same in return. If you see other healthcare providers outside Grow Therapy, such as your primary care doctor, you won't have to repeat your treatment history each time. This article explains how the exchange works, how your default preference is determined, and how to set or change it.

⚠️ Important: Record exchange through Carequality began in early August 2026. Participating in the HIE is optional and can be reversed at any time. Your choice never affects your ability to receive care at Grow Therapy.

Key Points

  • Carequality lets healthcare organizations involved in your care securely request treatment records to support coordinated care.

  • Every client receives a disclosure and a consent control, regardless of state or provider network.

  • Whether sharing starts on by default depends on your state.

  • You can set or change your preference anytime in Account → Settings → Privacy preferences.

  • Your preference takes effect in real time and is in place before any records are exchanged.

What is a Health Information Exchange?

A Health Information Exchange, or HIE, is a secure network that lets your healthcare providers look up your health records to support your care. For example, if you see a new provider who needs access to your treatment history, an HIE allows them to retrieve it without you having to request and send your records manually.

How your state of residence on file determines whether your records are shared by default

Opt-out states

In most states, sharing your records through the HIE is on by default. You don't need to take any action, and you can opt out at any time from your account settings.

Opt-in states

In Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee, sharing is off by default. Nothing is shared unless you affirmatively opt in. If you don't take action, your records won't be shared.

🌟 Note: This list reflects current state requirements and may change if state laws change.

Who receives the notice and controls the setting

  • Individual accounts: The client account holder receives the notice and controls their own setting.

  • Minors and guardian-managed accounts: The parent or guardian who holds the account receives the notice and controls the setting on the minor's behalf.

  • Shared or joint treatment (couples or family therapy): The primary account holder (whoever has the email on file) receives the notice and decides on behalf of the shared record.

Frequently asked questions

Are employer-sponsored (EAP) clients included in this health information sharing practice? Yes, if you’re receiving care through an employer-sponsored (EAP) plan, this applies to you as well. Your employer does not have visibility into your consent status.

If I opt out, what happens to information that was already shared? Opting out stops your records from being shared going forward. It doesn't retrieve or delete information that a provider has already received. This is true across healthcare generally, not just at Grow.

Do I need to do anything? In most states, no, sharing is already on, and you don't need to take any action unless you want to opt out. If you're in one of the seven opt-in states, you'll need to opt in for any sharing to happen.

Can I change my preference later? Yes. You can update it at any time in Account → Settings → Privacy preferences → Manage, and the change takes effect in real time.

Does this change how my Grow therapist and psychiatrist share information? No, nothing changes about how Grow providers work together on your care. This is only about whether providers outside Grow, like your PCP, can request your records through secure exchange networks.

If I opt out, will it affect my treatment or my relationship with my therapist? Not at all. Opting out (or not opting in) never affects your ability to receive services through Grow Therapy.

What happens to my preference if I move to a different state? Your default depends on the state of residence on file with Grow Therapy, so a move can affect what's already set. First, make sure your address is up to date if you haven't already. Then confirm your settings still reflect what you want in Account → Settings → Privacy preferences → Manage:

  • If you move into one of the seven opt-in states, you'll need to opt in again, even if sharing was already on before your move.

  • If you move out of an opt-in state, sharing may switch back on by default unless you'd already opted in.

If your setting doesn't match what you expect after confirming your address is up to date, contact our support team.
