AI intake summary

Learn how Grow automatically summarizes a new client's intake form to help you prepare for your first session with them.

🗓️ AI intake summaries are rolling out gradually. If you've seen an announcement in your provider portal, summaries will begin appearing for your intake sessions on the date shown there. If you don't see them yet, no action is needed — access is expanding to all providers soon.

Before your first session with a new client, Grow generates an AI summary of their intake form responses. The summary highlights the client's presenting concerns, relevant background, and a few suggested themes to explore. In turn, you can spend less time scrolling through the full form and more time preparing for the conversation.

Key Takeaways

  • The AI intake summary appears automatically before your first session with a new client — no action required on your part.

  • It highlights presenting concerns, relevant background, and suggested themes to explore, plus a link to the full intake form.

  • It appears in four places: the appointment detail flyout, the telehealth view, the top of the intake form, and the Overview tab of the client chart.

  • It's informational only. It doesn't replace clinical judgment and isn't part of the medical record.

  • The summary is clearly labeled as AI-generated, and you should always verify it against the full intake form.

What is an AI intake summary?

An AI intake summary is an automatically generated overview of a new client's intake form responses. It pulls together the client's reasons for seeking care, the relevant context they've shared, and a short list of themes you may want to follow up on during the intake session.

The summary is generated from the client's intake form responses, GAD-7/PHQ-9 scores, and age. It doesn't pull from any other source, and it doesn't diagnose, speculate, or infer beyond what the client shared.

What's included in the summary

Each AI intake summary includes:

  • A short summary of the client's presenting concerns and reason for seeking care.

  • Suggested themes to consider exploring during the intake session.

  • Clinical flags, when the client's responses indicate something like substance use or a prior hospitalization.

  • A View full intake link so you can open the complete form at any time.

Where you'll see it

The AI intake summary appears for new clients with an upcoming intake session, in four places:

  • Appointment detail flyout — open an upcoming intake appointment from your dashboard to see the summary alongside the client's contact and appointment details.

  • Telehealth view — the summary appears in the session panel so you can reference it without leaving the call.

  • Top of the intake form — open the client's full intake form and you'll see the summary above their responses.

  • Client chart, Overview tab — the summary also appears on the client's chart, so you can revisit it any time before the session.

How an AI intake summary is generated

  1. A new client completes the intake form when booking their first session.

  2. Grow generates a summary from their responses, synthesizing the most relevant details into a short overview.

  3. Before the intake session, you'll see the summary in your provider portal, wherever you're viewing that client’s information.

  4. Review the summary and suggested themes to guide your intake conversation, and use the full intake form to confirm anything you want.

The AI intake summary is designed to speed up intake prep — not to replace the full intake form or your clinical judgment. Always review the summary against the complete form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AI intake summary replacing the intake form?

No. The full intake form is always available through the View full intake link on the summary. The AI intake summary is a prep aid designed to make the form faster to review, not a replacement for it.

Is this feature required?

No. The summary appears automatically for eligible sessions, but it's informational only. You don't need to take any action, and it doesn't change your workflow unless you choose to engage with it.

Can I opt out?

The summary doesn't require any action, so if you'd rather not use it, you can simply choose not to engage with it.

If my client or I haven't consented to session recording or transcription, will I still see an AI intake summary?

Yes. Consent for session recording and transcription applies to Grow's session-based AI features, such as note summarization and session recaps — these require consent from both you and your client because they use session audio.

The AI intake summary is separate: it's generated only from your client's completed intake form, so it isn't affected by recording or transcription settings and will still appear for eligible intake sessions. Like the rest of the summary, it's informational only — if you'd rather not use it, you can simply not engage with it.

Does this affect my documentation or medical record?

No. The AI intake summary isn't clinical documentation. It doesn't write to the medical record, and clients can't see it.

Why don't I see the AI intake summaries?

This feature is being gradually rolled out to a limited group of providers. No action is required from you — if summaries aren't visible yet, they'll become available shortly.
