Clinical considerations when using AI

AI is a tool providers can use to support their documentation. This resource will review clinical considerations for implementation.

Using AI with Grow Therapy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a tool that can be used to support providers in their documentation. Grow Therapy includes AI-enabled summarization for the open-text sections of the initial assessment and progress note templates for therapists. After each session, providers can automatically send clients a Session Recap - a post-session summary. This document will review considerations to successfully implement AI-enabled summarization in your practice.

How is AI-enabled summarization used?

  • Grow uses AI-enabled summarization to create content in clinical notes and after-visit summaries.

  • AI-enabled summarization is a process where the verbal information provided during the therapy session is transcribed and summarized for provider review.

  • Grow holds a high bar for security and data integrity and ensures that security measures are met when using AI-enabled summarization.

  • Session data is encrypted and the third-party service providers we use for processing do not store or train on this data. Each provider can view what was captured and can edit any inaccuracies in the session summary.

  • For more information, see the AI-enabled summarization Provider FAQ.

How AI-enabled summarization can support clinical practice

As with all tools in the clinical space, we encourage you to ensure that using AI-enabled summarization aligns with your clinical practice. The following are ways we believe AI-enabled summarization may support your clinical practice:

  • AI-enabled summarization can allow you to deepen your focus on your client.

  • It may help reduce time spent on documentation and may improve the quality of your notes.

  • AI-enabled summarization is integrated into the EHR with no additional programs to learn

  • Using AI-enabled summarization may help decrease burnout due to less cognitive energy spent when producing notes.

Provider responsibilities when using AI-enabled summarization

Grow Therapy has designed AI-enabled summarization to generate information for parts of the clinical note. When using AI-enabled summarization, consider the following:

  • Always review AI-enabled summarization for correctness.

  • Ensure that content is personalized to your client and reflects accurately what was stated or completed during the session. Add, delete or remove content that doesn’t align with what was discussed during the clinical session.

  • AI doesn’t replace your knowledge of what to put in a therapy note. You need to know what content is required for session notes. You remain the expert in your documentation and what occurs in the therapy room.

  • AI doesn’t replace your critical thinking and assessment skills. Continue to use thorough assessment with your clients to obtain needed clinical information for treatment.

Familiarize yourself with AI-enabled summarization

Your clients trust you and your clinical judgment. When implementing a new tool in the therapy space, your knowledge and comfort will aid in helping clients decide whether they want to use it. As you partner with your clients, consider the following:

  • AI is a tool that we already use. From automated sentence suggestions in our email to recommending what’s next on Netflix, adding it to our notes is another iteration of what AI can do. Consider what information you need to feel comfortable.

  • Review the consent before toggling on AI-enabled summarization.

  • Before it can be used in a session, ensure that you understand how data is used and stored.

  • To use this tool in sessions with a client, that client must consent to the use of AI-enabled summarization. To encourage your clients to consent, you may want to consider using language such as this: “I would like to utilize AI-enabled summarization to help document our session so I can spend more time focusing on you. Your data is always encrypted to protect your privacy. I will review the content before adding in any of the notes to your medical record, and we can pause at any point if you do not feel comfortable with this feature.”
