UAW/UMass EAP | FAQ

Discover how Grow’s partnership with UAW/UMass enables clients to use EAP benefits to cover therapy sessions.

⚠️ The program launches on August 1, 2026. Booking will be unavailable until then.

Grow Therapy partners with the UAW/UMass Health & Welfare Trust Fund to expand access to mental health care for UMass Amherst graduate student employees, postdoctoral researchers, and their families. Through this collaboration, eligible members receive 3 EAP sessions per benefit year, fully covered by UAW/UMass, as part of their benefits package.

Key Takeaways

  • This benefit covers UAW/UMass employees and their dependents. Household members who are not dependents are not eligible.

  • Clients get 3 sessions per benefit year (August 1–July 31).

  • No-shows and late cancellations count against the 3-session total.

  • Employees and dependents with this benefit must book through the dedicated UAW/UMass directory (coming soon) to use their sessions.

Overview

These sessions are booked directly via the dedicated Grow Therapy UAW/UMass benefit directory (coming soon) rather than through the general Grow provider directory. Members can choose from any Grow provider who is licensed in their state, credentialed, and enrolled to see clients using the UAW/UMass benefit.

Providers with a master 's-level license or below are auto-credentialed for this benefit nationwide.

Even clients whose primary insurance isn't accepted by their provider can still use their 3 covered sessions. To continue care afterward, they can either self-pay or work with a provider who does accept their insurance.

Are prescribers eligible for this program?

Only therapists are eligible to accept UAW/UMass clients.

If I turn this benefit on, how many clients can I expect?

As with any payor, there is no guarantee for how many client intakes you can expect. If you're interested in taking on more clients, we recommend refreshing your profile with specialties, an upgraded headshot, and more details about the kinds of clients you prefer to work with.

Where can I find the rates?

To find the rates for the UAW/UMass benefit, access your Referrals & payors section of your provider portal.

Can I charge for no-shows or late cancellations?

Yes — providers should still submit invoices for late cancellations and no-shows for clients with the UAW/UMass benefit. Payouts will be based on the corresponding rate for CPT code 90837. No-show and late-cancellation fees count against the client's 3-session total, and it's up to the provider to invoice them. See Charge for no-show or late cancellations for a detailed walkthrough.

What issues can I address under EAP sessions?

Typically, workplace-related stress, anxiety, or life events. However, flexibility exists based on client needs; your clinical judgment guides the conversation.

How fast can I start?

If you keep your referrals toggle for UAW/UMass clients on, you'll be auto-enrolled and you can start receiving referrals right away on August 1st.

Do I need to provide any extra documentation when seeing UAW/UMass clients?

No. Providers seeing clients with the UAW/UMass benefit use the same note templates and standards as all other clients.

Can UAW/UMass access my client's information or session information?

No. Grow Therapy never shares session details or notes with an employer. Grow may share anonymized, aggregate reports about program usage that cannot identify individual participants. Any information disclosure is made in accordance with applicable privacy laws and regulations.

Client session information

Do clients have to use all 3 sessions with the same provider?

No. Clients are welcome to use their sessions with any provider accepting the UAW/UMass benefit.

Do unused sessions roll over?

This benefit includes 3 sessions per person, per benefit year (August 1–July 31). Unused sessions do not roll over and refresh at the start of each new benefit year.

Can clients apply the UAW/UMass benefit to past sessions and receive a refund?

No. The UAW/UMass benefit can only be applied to sessions held after a client enrolls in the program. Sessions completed prior to enrollment — including those paid for through insurance or self-pay — are not eligible for retroactive coverage or refunds.

What happens when all 3 sessions are completed?

After a client completes their covered sessions, they can either continue care with their provider using insurance (if you accept their plan) or elect to self-pay.

UAW/UMass offers its employees three insurance options: Cigna, BCBS of Massachusetts, and Blue Benefit Administrators of Massachusetts.

  • Cigna is a national payor — all Grow providers who accept Cigna are automatically enrolled, regardless of what state you're licensed in.

  • BCBS of Massachusetts and Blue Benefit Administrators of Massachusetts require Massachusetts residency — not just MA licensure — to be credentialed. If you're licensed in Massachusetts but live elsewhere, you won't be enrolled with either of these two plans.

If you don't accept a client's primary insurance, they may need to be matched with a new provider to continue care after their 3 sessions. Learn how to refer a client directly in your provider portal in Refer a client to another Grow Therapy provider.

Can spouses, household members, or the employee's dependents also use the UAW/UMass benefit?

Employees and their dependents can each access their own set of 3 sessions. This partnership defines dependents as spouses, domestic partners, or dependent children under 26. Non-dependent household members are excluded.

Do I need to keep track of the client's remaining sessions?

Providers and clients can view remaining sessions in both the provider and client portals, just as they're tracked for other EAP benefits.

Is couples counseling covered under this benefit?

Yes. UAW/UMass has confirmed that couples counseling is included under this benefit.

Where can I direct clients with this benefit if they have questions?

Clients can contact Support via live chat in their client portal, through the UAW/UMass benefits page (coming soon), or by calling 1(857) 288-5457.
